Ways To Make 2017 Your Best Year Ever
This year got off to an amazing start! I have been reflecting on the highs and lows of last year. The moments that made me proud like launching this blog, learning to shoot with a brand-new camera, and deliberately seeking joy in everyday moments. These are the things that I hope to piggy back on in 2017. I'm not the kind of girl that sits down and sets a long list of resolutions. Rather I like to ponder where I want to be in 12 months and set realistic goals to get there. I just know the kind of life that I'd like to live and the way that I want to feel about my choices. I cannot just pin point one resolution because that it sort of limiting. It is just my goal to dedicate all my energy to growing in every way possible each year by expanding more and more on each goal reached.
It is exciting at the start of the week, month or year to have the chance to turn a new leaf. In order to keep the momentum going all year long, it is important to me to reflect on a regular basis on where I have been and where life is going. Here are some ways that I'm going to make this the best year ever and I would like to encourage you to keep setting goals and growing too.
1. PLAN AHEAD
Start taking 10 minutes each evening to plan for tomorrow. Review the schedule and set goals. Just by taking a moment to write down these tasks down makes it more likely to be accomplished. Also, you won’t stay up all night stressing over what you may forget because it is all there in your planner.
2. TAKE RISKS
Make this the year that you say “Yes”! All the things that you have been putting off and opportunities that you have turned down, well this is the year to forget doubt and take the risk. Fear can only be conquered by doing the very things that scare you the most.
3. DISCONNECT AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK
Ok…ok! I know this may seem like a hard thing to do. Studies show that taking a break from social media and digital devices for just one day can increase mental health, provide clarity, and promote creative thinking. Give it a try!
4. START A BUDGET
Take some time to crunch the numbers and create a budget. Try to focus on spending less and finding out what triggers any overspending habits. Get serious about your money by using an app like Mint to keep you on track.
5. PRACTICE SELF-CARE
This is a real thing. Allowing yourself to say “no” to the things that do not serve you and instead shifting your focus to practicing making yourself happy.
6. DISCOVER MY ROOTS
I am obsessed genealogy. The website Ancestry has made it fun and exciting to research your family’s history. In addition, filling in your family tree, you can narrow down the exact origin of your family linage with a DNA test from MyHeritage.
7. BECOME A MORNING PERSON
Getting an early start to the day and following a well planning morning routine is what almost all successful people have in common. I am challenging myself to start each morning with a healthy breakfast, quiet meditation, and a good stretch or workout.
8. START A GRATITUDE JOURNAL
Writing down the things that you are most grateful for is a sure way to help to appreciate the simple pleasures.
9. SURROUND MYSELF WITH CREATIVE PEOPLE
Choose carefully who and what you spend your time on this year. If it is your desire be more creative seek creative people. They will push you to expand your mind and inspire you to keep doing what you love.
10. LEARN A NEW SKILL
Attend a workshop or webinar to learn a new skill. Check out sites like Skillshare for online courses that teach calligraphy and graphic design. Eventbrite is a great source to find local events in your community.
11. READ A NEW BOOK EACH MONTH
Set aside the time to read a classic or a new release each month. If you are like me and find it hard to complete a book, check out Audible for an amazing selection of audiobooks.
12. PRIORITIZE MY GOALS
Whenever you write a goal is more likely that you will achieve it. Get into the habit of making a list of goals. Place the list in a place that is easily accessible and can looked at often. Write it on paper and the save it on your phone or computer as well.
13. SHARE INTENTIONALLY
The next time you get the urge to share a social media post, take a moment to ask yourself why you sharing and what you want to achieve with the message. Always present an authentic and truthful reflection of you. Use social media as a source for good only and to promote more positivity in the world.
14. TEACH A CHILD OR ELDERLY PERSON SOMETHING NEW
Take the time to teach an elder friend, co-worker, and family member to use a new app or their smart phone. They will appreciate being able to keep up the technology changes and share their lives with the world too. Same for a little one, teach a child to tie their shoes or write in cursive. Be patient and remember, how you wanted to be treated when you were learning a new task in school or at work.
15. EXPLORE OFTEN
The best way to get in touch with yourself is to step out of your comfort zone and see what the world has to offer. Travel to a new country this year, visit a museum, try an ethnic cuisine, learn a French, anything that expands your mind.
I plan to make this year great in these ways and more. Mostly, friends, I hope that in everything that you do that you choose joy. Surround yourself with friends that empower you, practice self-care physically and mentally, and begin each day with the goal of seeking joy. Make a conscious effort to find happiness in the simple things, and don’t be afraid to grow through the tough days!
